Buckeyes Lay Down the Lawsox... Again

EAST RIVER (June 25, 2013) - Sometimes, history does repeat itself.  Flashback to 2012:  Ohio State squared off against the undefeated Lawsox...on the banks of the East River...and came away with a 6-5 victory.  Fast forward to this evening: OSU once again took on an undefeated Lawsox team (now 6-1)...on the banks of the East River...and again dealt the Sox their first loss.  This time, the victory came during a season ending clash in the form of a 6-2 victory.

Ohio State spotted the Lawsox a 2-0 lead after the first inning.  That lead would be short lived.  The Bucks got on the board in the 2nd inning when Jimmy Klingensmith led off the inning with a walk (1 of 6 base on balls the Buckeyes drew in the game) and took third on a single by Evan Binder.  Tom Antoniello followed with a sacrifice fly to score the run and cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Buckeyes took the lead for good the next inning.  Denise Sluterbeck reached base on a fielder's choice.  Back-to-back walks to Jon Graham and Carly Klingensmith loaded the bases. An RBI sacrifice fly by Brian Keatts tied the game at 2.  Jimmy Klingensmith then came through with a two out single to give Ohio State a 3-2 lead.

The Buckeye defense remained strong throughout the game - turning two double plays.  Andrew Vannata and Kevin Ma successfully patrolled the outfield, while Jen Harbour and Carly Klingensmith made plays in the infield.  Not that they needed it, but the Bucks added to their lead in the 6th inning when Jimmy Klingensmith connected for a seeing-eye home run.

Ohio State completed the scoring in the 7th inning, plating two more runs.  Sluterbeck drew a one out walk and scored when Jon Graham connected for a home run, giving the Bucks a 6-2 lead and providing the final margin of victory.  The win capped a 6-5 campaign for Ohio State. The Buckeyes remain in the hunt for a playoff spot, but now must sit and wait to see how things play out.  Regardless of what the future holds, this was a fine way to end another winning season.

Eight Is Enough - Buckeyes Win In Extra Innings

GREAT LAWN (June 21, 2013) - Ohio State returned to Central Park's Great Lawn for the first time in several seasons this evening and made the trip a memorable one.  Trailing late in the game, OSU rallied and came away with an 11-8 victory over Pubs in 8 innings.

Things started off well for the Bucks in the top of the 1st.  With 2 outs, Brian Keatts reached base on an error by the shortstop. Jimmy Klingensmith singled and everyone came home when Jonathan Graham cleared the bases with a 3-run home run.  Advantage Buckeyes.

Ohio State added to their lead in the 4th inning.  Carly Klingensmith started things off with a sharp single and took third on a double by brother Jimmy.  Graham came through with a double, scoring the Klingensmiths and giving OSU a 5-0 lead.

Over the next two innings the wheels fell off a bit as Pubs scored 8 times, most of which were unearned, to take an 8-5 lead heading into the 6th inning.  As has become their specialty in recent years, the Bucks rallied.

JT Ferrera led off the 7th with a double.  With one out, Keatts connected for a 2-run homer, cutting the deficit to one.  Brother Jimmy collected his third hit of the day with a single, using his speed to take second after some lacksidasical fielding by the Pubs.  Andrew Vannata came through with a clutch two out single to knot the game at 8.

The Buckeyes fielding shined from that point forward - holding Pubs in checks for the rest of the evening.  Jackie Sunderland made a fine play from the catcher position to snag a foul ball for a key out.  Not to be outdone, Denise Sluterbeck accomplished a similar feat the next inning at catcher.  Ted Anderson, Kevin Ma, Anne Teutschel and Sam Strassman all added to the cause by fielding their positions in fine fashion.

With the game tied at 8 and darkness encroaching, the game moved to extra innings.  In the top of the 8th, Jen Harbour reached base on a fielder’s choice.  With two outs, Carly came up big with a single, making it two chicks on the pond with two outs.  Keatts then lifted a 3-run homer to right center field, and with that Ohio State had retaken the lead at 11-8.

OSU put the game away in the bottom half of the 8th, capped by a fine diving stop and put out by Jeff Kreisler at first base.  It was a satisfying victory for the Scarlet and Gray, who return to the field on June 25th for the season finale against the undefeated Lawsox on the banks of the East River.

ABC-TV Not Ready for Prime Time: Fall to OSU

MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS (June 5, 2013) - Returning to Morningside Heights for the first time in years, Ohio State dismantled ABC-TV by a score of 13-9 to claim their 4th victory of the season.  The win puts the Buckeyes in the middle of the pack as they head down the stretch for the final three games.

OSU got off to a fast start in the top of the 1^st inning when JT Ferrera and Carly Klingensmith laced singles to start things off.  Brian Keatts cleared the bases with a 3-run home run to give the Bucks a 3-0 lead.  ABC managed to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame. 

The Bucks took the lead for good in the third inning.  With one out, Jimmy Klingensmith stroked a double and scored when Evan Binder lined an RBI single.  Jon Graham reached base when the center fielder couldn't handle his fly ball.  The bases were loaded after Andrew Vannata drew a walk.  Binder score on a nicely placed ground ball by Denise Sluterbeck when the catcher could not find home plate on the force play.  

Holding a 5-3 lead heading into the 4^th, OSU began pouring it on.  Ferrera doubled to start the inning and took third on another sharp single by Carly.  Keatts followed with an RBI single and Jimmy with an RBI double.  Binder then pulled off the rare 2 RBI sac fly why his fly out to right field was so deep it allowed 2 runners to score.  OSU held a 9-3 lead after four innings of play.

The Bucks were back at it in the 5^th.  Kevin Ma led off the inning with a single.  Ferrera hit a one out double and was then thrown out at third on an RBI single by Carly.  Keatts then hit a deep ball to right center just off the fielder's glove for a two run homer.  Jimmy made hit back-to-back jacks by absolutely crushing a home run to left field, giving OSU a commanding 13-3 lead.  

Despite stellar play by Carly at third base and a solid effort by Amanda-the-sub at second, the Bucks got a little careless in the final two innings before closing out a 13-9 win.  Ohio State has a big one next week as they take on Deloitte in Central Park.

Ohio State Deals Mamiye Sales First Loss in Convincing Fashion

HECKSCHER FIELD (May 6, 2013) - Ohio State returned to Central Park for the first time this season tonight to take on the undefeated and division leading Mamiye Sales team.  Mamiye is undefeated no more, as the Buckeyes put on a strong performance - shutting out the sales squad en route to a 7-0 victory.

Ohio State got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning when James Klingensmith led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Jason Smith.  With one out, Andrew Vannata stroked an RBI single, staking Ohio State to a 1-0 lead. 

With the strong pitching and fielding the Buckeyes displayed, one run would prove to be enough.  Jeff Kreisler made his first start of the season and was outstanding on the hill.  Veterans Kevin Ma and Brian Keatts capably manned the outfield and infield, respectively.  OSU also utilized their overflowing estrogen wisely - rotating a team record six female players throughout the game.  Carly Klingensmith, Jessica Brown, Jen Harbour, Pam Swidler, Denise Sluterbeck and Anne Teutschel (who teamed with husband Jeff to form the first ever husband/wife pitcher-catcher battery in franchise history) flawlessly stalked the field - leaving the sales team with little hope of cashing in on a base hit.

The Buckeyes broke the game open in the 3rd inning.  Kriesler led off with a single and scored when Jon Graham (who was no doubt inspired by the posting of the team stats earlier in the day, which showed him starting the season 0 for 7) laced a two-run homer down the right field line.  With two outs, Tom Antoniello doubled and came around to score when Evan Binder launched a triple.  James Klingensmith followed with a long home run, giving OSU a 6-0 lead.

Ohio State tacked on a run in the bottom of the 5th inning when Kriesler reached second on an error and later scored on a ground ball.  Thoroughly demoralized, Mamiye went quietly in the latter innings.  It was a big win for the Bucks, who return to Riverbank for a Friday night affair on May 17th to take on Fury.

Buckeyes Start Season in Style with Thrilling 10-7 Victory

RIVERBANK PARK (April 4, 2013) -  Wow.  Coming off of a division championship in the Fall, Ohio State picked up right where they left off as they took to the banks of the Hudson for a chilly season opener against ASCAP.  Demonstrating, yet again, a flare for the dramatic and refusing to wilt under pressure, OSU overcame a 6 run deficit and came without one out of losing before charging back to win 10-7.

Much like the weather, OSU started off cold, allowing ASCAP to take a 6-0 lead after the 1st inning.  Such a start would demoralize a lesser team, but not these Buckeyes.  OSU began chipping away in the 2nd inning.  Tom Antoniello led off with a double and came around to score on a scorching double by Evan Binder.  After Jessica Brown smartly moved Binder to third with a sacrifice, David Loss came through in his first ever at-bat for Ohio State with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

The Buckeye defense settled in from that point forward.  Jen Harbour made her long awaited return to the diamond and played a stellar second base, including sparking a 4-6-3 double play that shifted momentum in favor of the Scarlet & Gray.     

With the score unchanged, OSU struck again in the top of the 5th inning.  Loss led off with a single and advanced to second one out later on a single by Kevin Ma.  Denise Sluterbeck, who singled in her first ever at-bat for the Bucks a few innings earlier and played flawlessly at the catching position, reached on an error, allowing Loss to score.  Rally Baby's Daddy, Jeff Kreisler, then singled in another run.  With ASCAP's nerves clearly fraying, JT Ferrera reached on an error, allowing another run to score.  Brian Keatts followed with an RBI single.  The Bucks had come all the way back, knotting the game a 6.

ASCAP regained the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring once to take a 7-6 advantage.  The damage was limited by superb lunging snares of line drives by Antoniello at third and Keatts at shortstop.  Time for the drama. 

The first two Buckeye hitters went down quietly in the top of the 7th.  Undaunted, Ferrera came through with a clutch single to keep OSU alive.  Keatts then blasted a triple to right center field, tying the game.  Curiously, ASCAP intentionally walked Jimmy Klingensmith (his second walk of the evening) - showing little respect for NYC's favorite DJ, Tom Antoniello.  He made them pay by lacing an RBI single to give Ohio State its first lead at 8-7.  Binder and Brown then hit sharp grounders that ASCAP couldn't handle, allowing two more runs to score.  By the end of the inning, OSU had charged out to a 10-7 lead.

The Buckeyes continued to flash the good leather in the bottom of the 7th, slamming the door on their opponent.  It was truly an outstanding effort all around - no better way to start a title defense.  OSU looks to keep the momentum going next week when they return to Riverbank Park to take on NY & Company.
